The Association of Filipino Students in Japan (AFSJ) aims to unite all Filipino students and graduates in Japan; assisting them to excel in their academic endeavors and helping them make the best out of their time as a foreign student by organizing different academic, cultural, and social activities as well as promoting effective networking among its members.
Founded in 1954, AFSJ is involved in the activities of the Philippine Embassy and other sectors of the Filipino community in Japan. It is a part of the Philippine Assistance Group (PAG), an organization providing aid for Filipinos in times of crisis. It is also a founding member of the ASEAN Youth Network in Japan (AYNJ), an organization which brings together Japan-based student organizations of different ASEAN countries. It also works closely with the Science and Technology Advisory Council – Japan Chapter (STAC-J) in promoting academic excellence to its members.
AFSJ is composed of undergraduates, graduate students, specialized college students, research students, teacher training program participants, short-term exchange students as well as graduates who are currently working and residing in Japan. Most of these students are recipients of different scholarships such as the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship, Asian Development Bank Scholarship, International Monetary Fund Scholarship, Panasonic Scholarship, and other private company scholarships, while some are privately-funded. These students are considered experts in their respective fields and are valued as an academic pool of future leaders and pioneers that will promote the advancement of the Philippines and the Filipino people.
